Being away for the holidays was a strange feeling. For the most part, the season was filled with festive crafts in every classroom and a strange amount of gifts, considering that less than 10 percent of Vietnamese practice Christianity. I guess it was assumed that all expats were Christians because there were extra special activities happening in schools and around town. Nico’s band had a Christmas show. My school had a variety show (which I emceed as the Little Match girl, a weird experience that I can explain later). Shelby, Jenna and I spent our nights and weekends on the hunt for free mulled wine. On the 25th, I ate a lot of candy and watched what some may consider too many Christmas movies. Coming home from a two-hour class, I was greeted by 30 British expats, all friends of my housemates. We ate coconut curry and enjoyed the case of beer our landlord had bought for the holiday she doesn’t celebrate.
